সুন্দরবনে মাছ ধরা (The fishing at Shundarban)

সুন্দরবনের টাইগার পয়েন্টে একটা খারি দিয়ে ঢোকার পথেই চোখে পড়ল লেখা "মাছ ধরা নিষেধ"। একটা ছোট টিনের সাইন বোর্ড, জং পড়ে গেছে, লেখা কিছুটা ঝাপসা হয়ে গেছে। বোঝা গেল, বেশ আগে থেকেই এখানে মাছ ধরা নিষেধ।

খাড়িতে নৌকা দিয়ে ধীরে ধীরে ভিতরে ঢুকলাম। এক জায়গায় পানির দুপাশে বাশ দিয়ে জাল টানানো আছে। গাইড বললেন, জোয়ারে পানি বেড়ে গেলে জাল ডুবে যায়, তারপর ভাটার সময় পানি নামলে, জালে মাছ আটকা পড়ে। শুধু মাছ না। শাপ এবং আরো অন্যান্য সামদ্রিক জীবও আটকা পড়ে মরে। এভাবে মাছ ধরা খুবই খারাপ।

একজায়গায় দেখলাম সাদা-কালো ডোরা কাটা একটা শাপ মাটিতে শুয়ে আছে। আসলে জালে আটকা পড়ায় জেলেরা মেরে ফেলে গেছে। পরে কোন পশুপাখি খেয়ে ফেলবে।

আরো কিছু দূর গিয়ে দেখলাম জেলে নৌকা। মাছ ধরে ফিরছে। আমাদের এক সফর সঙ্গী জানতে চাইলো কি মাছ ধরেছেন? দাম কত? ওরা বড় একটা মাছ ধরে দেখালো। গাইড তাড়াতাড়ি বললেন, এখানে মাছ ধরা নিষেধ, তাই আমরা আপনার কাছ থেকে মাছ কিনবো না।

খারি থেকে বের হয়ে শিপে ওঠার সময় দেখলাম, ওরা অন্য একটা নৌকায় মাছ শিফট করছে। নতুন নৌকা হয়তো বেচার জন্য বাজারে নিয়ে যাবে...

We were traveling at Sundarban Tigar point. To have a better view of the forest we get down from our ship and took a boat. Then we went to a small canal. Before we enter the canal I saw a small sign board, written, "No Fishing". The board was very old; its color had been gone in many places. I can guess this notice had been given long time backed. When we enter the canal I saw at both side fisher men had placed fishing net with the help of bamboo. Our guide said in the tide water will rise and all fish and other water animals will get inside the net and after sometime when water will go away those fishes with other water creatures will be caught. This is a very poor way of fishing. Because it’s not only destroying all kind of fish, but also other water creatures of this forest.

In one place we saw a snake, yellow and black striped. It was dead and was at the mud. It was dead while fishing was going on and later some other creature will eat it.

After a while we found a fisher men boat. They were returning from the canal after catching fish. One of our tour mate asked "Which fish did you catch? What's the price". They hold up a big fish. But our guide said, "We won't buy from you, because you have caught it at no fishing area"

When were returning to our ship we saw those fishermen were shifting their fishes to other boat, probably for selling...
