Successful business

Do you know who the successful businessmen are? They are the ones who never solve the problems; moreover, sometimes they encourage the problems to keep their business running smoothly.

An example is road construction. You will find that ancient roads don't need any repair; they are still functional. But modern roads need fixing every year or month. So, the maintenance or construction business keeps going.

Another example is diseases. As long as it exists, you have to pay for the treatment.

We may say this is unethical, but businesspeople will argue that this is business tact and the way to become rich by hurting innocent people.

I hope they find a proper way to make a profit without harming anyone or leaving the problem unresolved.

Campaign in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, tradition/benefit is that when you want to campaign for anything, it could be a business product or any kind of election or services, you can use anything in this country without any permission. Treaditionally it is accepted by the people of this country.

Like, you can write about the campaign, or colour or decorate any wall, like a personal home, office buildings, or any shop. You can put your information on any tree, lamp post, public transport, etc. Especially during elections, the campaign party decorates the whole city. Like they own it.

Forgive them

There are many times in your life when others' actions upset you and cause suffering. You may react instinctively in the moment. Usually, you'll find that your reaction worsens the situation. Sometimes it might improve the situation, but it can also ruin your mood or damage your relationships with others.

If you say nothing, it might burn you inside and ruin your day. It could also give you a headache.

The best option I see is to forgive them, and also forgive yourself. You'll find you can handle everything better now. With peace of mind, you might discover a better way to solve or reduce the problem, or you will simply be able to ignore it for your own mental peace.

Marriage ceremony

Bangladesh has a tradition of celebrating marriage ceremonies, as do many other countries. There are some common steps that everyone follows, some inherited from family or community, to ensure everyone can enjoy the celebration. They spend days celebrating at various locations and months preparing, depending on their budget or capabilities.

We received many invitations to join marriage ceremonies. In most cases, my mom didn't want to go because we didn't have a car at that time. Most ceremonies end late at night, making it very difficult to find a ride back home. Uber wasn't available then.

Even if we attend the ceremony, my parents just eat food and then go back home. I haven't had the chance to see any of the activities at the ceremony. I have asked them many times, but they never listen to me.

I regretted it to my friends and said I really wanted to see all the activities of a marriage ceremony. They laughed at me. They said, " You will see when your ceremony occurs." Allah knows that was a disaster.

My friend Shumi helped me fulfill this wish. She invited me to her house to stay for three days and participate in all the ceremonial activities. Well, it wasn't really an option. She ordered me to do so. I stayed with her family for three days and watched all the programs. Shumi and her family took very good care of me—more than the bride herself. They constantly checked whether I had eaten or was facing any problems. Even though Shumi was sitting as the bride, she asked her mother to check whether I had eaten anything. It was a wonderful memory for me.

During my marriage ceremony, no one looked after me like that. Everyone at my ceremony was busy eating. No one fed me. By the end, there was a shortage of seating, and people faced trouble because of the limited availability. My sister's in-laws were also invited to the ceremony. They managed to set up a new table in my room (the bride's room) and sat there to eat. Boro apa (my brother-in-law's older sister) suddenly noticed I was sitting alone. She asked, "Did you eat anything?" I said no. So, she fed me 2 or 3 bites of rice from her hand. In the meantime, the groom's family arrived at the ceremony, so she stopped. Then, they started causing trouble because of the food shortage. The restaurant was very slow, and they caused such delays in arranging the food that everyone became very angry.

A person from the groom's family came to me and asked, "Did you eat food?" I replied, "Yes" (I had taken 2 or 3 bites). She said, "What kind of bride are you? How could you eat before the groom's lunch?" Then she went to the groom's family and kept saying, "What kind of bride is this?" Just to let you know, generally, the bride's family feeds the bride earlier because she may feel shy to eat anything with the groom.

My youngest sister came to me and said that the groom and his friends are also causing a scene. They didn't like the food that was served, so they are demanding something else. I saw from the window how the groom and his friends got up from their tables and walked to another table to eat more, showing their anger.

At the end of the day, my mom came and said they were going to eat now and asked if I wanted to eat. I have seen enough to feel eat anything, so I said no.

Anyway, as I already declared, I have eaten. No one offered me food after arriving at the groom's family's house. I think I enjoyed enough food at my marriage ceremony. I don't even know what the food will look like at my wedding.

Biye Bareer khabar (Food from the marriage ceremony)

In Bangladesh, the food arrangements for the marriage ceremony are considered the best. People say that the food is comparable to what is served at a marriage, which helps you understand how good it is. As they say, the chicken roast from the biye barir (the home where the marriage is taking place) is especially delightful.

Sometimes I hear Bangladeshi people say, 'It's been a long time since I attended or ate at a wedding.' They miss the food. I also miss that food too.

Sometimes people get upset because they are not invited to a wedding. In most cases, they are not upset about missing the ceremony but about the food.

I heard people comparing or judging the food arrangement at a marriage ceremony. They said that the food wasn't cooked enough, didn't taste good, or that somewhere else was great, etc. They judge the bride's parents for not arranging a good marriage ceremony or food arrangement.

In my childhood, I enjoyed the marriage ceremony programs and food as well. They looked very delightful. After growing up, I realized how difficult and costly it is for a bride's parent to arrange everything. It requires time, money, energy, and people's judgments, especially from the groom's family. On the other hand, no matter how poorly the groom's family arranges the program, the bride's family can never speak badly, or they will make the bride's life difficult.

I think we should all be thankful to the bride's family regardless of how they arrange the ceremony. We should appreciate their effort and accept all mistakes and poor decisions. It's not only for the bride's family; anyone who arranges food for you, don't judge them, and try to enjoy the food and moments with them.

You don't need to torture those who are seeking help.

In most cases, when someone asks for help or comes to you seeking assistance, that person has nothing left or no one else to turn to. They are already ashamed of their failures in life and feeling low.

In that time, if you take pictures or videos, or record life moments and display them to the world to show how bad the situation they are dealing with is, that's not fair.

If you want to promote your activities, take pictures of yourself, your products, and the team you're working with. You can also take pictures of the area. However, never take pictures of people who come to you seeking help; they are already feeling vulnerable, and you shouldn't make it worse.

In some areas, the organization makes people stand in lines outdoors in public places. This is another form of torture. Nobody needs to know who is seeking help.

Like Muslims believe, your left hand shouldn't know what the right hand has donated. Be a human!

We have limited space to live

We may have learned a lot about the universe and discovered many new spheres, but we haven't found anywhere humans can enjoy going to like another country. So, we only have one planet to live on.

Throughout the entire universe, people couldn't find any plants on other planets. So, to live and eat, we have to take care of this planet the way it should be.

Even on this planet, we can't live just anywhere. Most of it is covered by salty seawater. Then there are icy regions, deserts with sands and hot weather, mountains which are very difficult for humans to traverse, and deep jungles where survival is challenging.

There are very few spaces where we can live, grow plants, and keep proteins for a healthy life. We can't be so arrogant and greedy that we destroy this planet with our work. It doesn't matter how directly or indirectly we are involved; wherever these occurrences happen, they will cause suffering for all, today or tomorrow, to your child or loved one.

Let's solve all issues through discussion; let's not destroy this planet for the sake of profit. You can't eat money; you need plants and the animals that eat plants.

Let's now act like illiterates about this Earth. Let's make peace for everybody with everybody; we all belong to this earth.

Biography 335: Lost in the books

I used to read a lot of books. If I couldn't find any books (it was before the internet era, yes, I am that old), I even read leaflets, manuals, menus, and so on. This way, I actually learned many things. Usually, we don't read manuals, but if you do, you'll find there are many things you didn't know before.

One day, my older sister and I
went to Dola apa's house. We stayed there the whole night to join the next day's birthday program. I am sure they had no interest in taking me because I wasn't very close to them. But Dola apa was close to Boro apa, so they probably just took me with her.

As usual, I was alone in their home. I am used to this kind of situation. I started looking for something to read. Our uncle liked to read a lot. Wherever he went, he made a library there. Most of the books were about politics or very advanced topics for me. I was very young. I didn't expect anything for a teen in their house, but I was still looking at the books. Then I found some great books that could be good for me. I started reading. The whole day and the next day, I just read and read. I got so absorbed in the books that I didn't notice who had come home or how they were engaging. I found a wooden, comfortable chair on the balcony; I just sat there and kept enjoying the books and their stories. I spent good moments in that house.

Biography 334: My father didn't get the birthday cake

It was Dola apa's birthday. We visited their home to join her birthday party. I don't know where they ordered the birthday cake, but it was very delicious.

You know, when you have a room full of people and need to distribute a medium-sized cake, you slice it into small pieces and hand them out to everyone. Sisi Apa did the same. As I told you, the cake was very delicious. I really wanted to take some more pieces because less than half of the cake remained on the tray. But I felt really shy about asking or taking any myself. The food was served by the host family, so I assume they weren't expecting the guests to serve themselves. It was probably due to how they manage things, I thought. So, I didn't help myself.

I saw a lady taking a cake by herself. I told you the cake was very delicious. But my shyness didn't let me ask for any or take a piece. After a few minutes, Lisi apa came; asked did everyone have the cake? Some nodded their heads affirmatively. She took the cake away, probably to store it in the refrigerator.

The reason for this long explanation is that there was another person, who felt shyer than I—my father. Somehow, the food distributor didn't give him any cake. He didn't sit near me, so I wouldn't notice. At night, after returning home, my dad told my mom that he didn't get any piece of cake. But dad didn't want to make them feel bad, so he chose not to tell them.

My mom isn't the kind of lady who keeps this information to herself. Probably the next day, she called her sister and told her that my dad didn't get any piece of cake.

Immediately, my aunt bought a small cake and came to our home with Dola apa. Her other daughters might also be with her; I don't remember. Dola apa and Boro khala cut the cake and enjoyed it with our family, including my dad.

My aunt kept telling my dad, 'You should have asked me.' Dad was feeling shyer and trying to hide under the floor. But anyway, we were happy to have my aunt and Dola apa at home.

I actually didn't know what happened; I was surprised to see them at home with cake. After listening to some conversations between my aunt and mom while enjoying the cake, I understood what was going on.

Bangla vs English terms

In the Bangla language, we have some additional words that don't exist in English. For example, in English, we call him uncle. In Bangla, we have chacha (father's brother), fufa (father's sister's husband), mama (mother's brother), khalu (mother's sister's husband), taloi (sister's father-in-law), etc. If we translate these into English, all of them would be called uncle.

In my childhood, I was very confused about all these relationships. So, sometimes I used to follow what my mother says. For example, I used to call Dula bhai (brother-in-law) to my Boro Khalu (uncle). Later, I figured out that my mother called him Dula bhai. One day, my older sister corrected me. I tried to remember that, but sometimes, by mistake, I used to call him Dula bhai.

Biography 333: She was stealing

I was very young. During those days, my mom used to have a permanent housemaid. I mean, they had to live with us and work with my mom. If they couldn't prove their work to a high standard or commit any unforgivable mistake, my mom would send them back.

One woman started working in our house, but we were not happy with her work and behavior. So, Mom asked her to leave. She got ready and said goodbye to mom. She was sweating a lot. At that moment, my Boro Khalu (my mother's older sister's husband) was in our house. He told my mom to check her before she left.

My mom generally doesn't do that, but she checked her luggage and found some household items she was taking with her. Khalu also asked for a body check, but my mom wasn't ready for that. She said, 'Whatever you take, just give it to me; I won't punish you.' Then she brought out some sarees that were hidden in her body. Those belonged to my mom. Anyway, mom didn't take them back; let her take those.

I was thinking, my khalu was very experienced in this matter; he knew exactly what was going on here.

My mom's garden

My mom's garden had lots of Aloe Vera plants, as you can see in the picture. My older sister tried to use those plants; as far as I know, she used them to improve her hair and promote glowing skin. However, the process looks very difficult, so I haven't tried anything with those plants.

Biography 332: Sleeping issues.

Once upon a time, I didn't have any problem sleeping. It's not that I could sleep anywhere, like in a chair or a new place. But if I had a good sleeping environment, I didn't have any trouble sleeping. After dinner, sometimes I wanted to watch TV, sometimes my parents let me, and sometimes not. But when I went to my bed, I could sleep.

Now things have changed. Sometimes I can manage to get to bed on time, but most of the time I can't sleep. I try to relax, but nothing works. Then I have to get up and start working without sleep. Again, I try at bedtime, but nothing works. Sometimes, after a few days, I can. I have accepted my new condition. I don't always have to be perfect. I might have some trouble in my life.

Wanting someone and loving someone aren't the same.

Wanting someone and loving someone aren't the same. When you want someone, you want them for yourself. You want to be physically and mentally benefited, to have kids with them, to have a good life because you expect they will help or provide that to you, etc. You don't consider what they might want, what their likes are, what their expectations are, or what will make them happy.

Let me give you an example. You may like or want chicken to eat. You will feed them properly and keep them in a good place so that one day you will eat them. You don't make a house for them to give them comfort or happiness, and you don't let them live the way they want to live, open and free to go anywhere they want. You may protect them from outside danger, but not for their sake; you do so for your own benefit.

Now think about what you think of your partner. Do you want them or do you love them? Be honest!

Biography 331: Removed the phone number

When I get angry at someone, I decide I won't communicate with that person anymore. After a while, my anger goes down, and I start thinking, what's the point? Everybody has problems. I can just ignore the issue and keep communicating. When I start communicating again, that person does the same thing to me again, and make me think I shouldn't have changed my mind and let them hurt me again.

When I was in school, we had a landline only. I used to keep a phone book and write all my classmates' phone numbers in it. If I decided not to call a person again for any reason, I used to cut the phone number out and mark it so dark that I couldn't figure it out again.

Because I knew I would change my mind after some time, I tried to recover the phone number and call that person again. I really tried, but because I had marked it as dark, I couldn't. I was thinking, why did I do that? I couldn't call that person anymore.

But I was right the first time. So I always try to follow my first decision. I know that if I change it, I might regret it more.

Myths believed by doctors.

There are some myths that all doctors believe. One is that when a mother brings her child with a problem, there is actually no problem, and mom is worrying for nothing. I have seen this myth followed by doctors everywhere.

My suggestion is that you can believe anything you want. But as a doctor, if mom is saying something, please check it out and make sure there is no problem before declaring it.

I have seen many people suffer only because of this myth. Doctors didn't check properly because Mom was the one who pointed out the problem.

Biography 330: Over phone calls.

In my student life, I used to talk over phone for hours. It wasn't one-sided. People who talked with me also liked to keep the conversation going. Unless anyone showed annoyance, I kept going with this phone-a-friend conversation.

I liked phone calls because, when I speak in person, I don't just hear what they are saying; I see how they are reacting, what they are doing, and how much interest they show in my speaking. So, obviously, I shortened my sentences and completed the conversation. I don't want to annoy anyone, because I don't like to be annoyed, either.

Now that I am older, I like to talk over video calls too. I want to be sure how the person is reacting during the conversation, so I can decide what to say and what not to say.

In my work life, I have had good conversations with my clients and colleagues. As a volunteer, I have worked on a phone-a-friend project, where I contacted lonely senior people during the COVID-19 pandemic and talked with them. While talking with them, I have found that I have benefited by learning many things from them. They just had someone to talk to.

Let go

When you have too much stress, you have no choice but to figure out how to let go of it all. I am learning that too. The most effective effort is to let go. Just let go of everything. It could be people, money, pride, status, a job, or anything else. Stop worrying about them. Be prepared to accept losing everything. I found this very helpful in recovering from stressful situations. When you have nothing, you don't have anything to worry about. So if you want to lose your burdens, just let go. Who or what wants to stay will stay.

Biography 329: Web Development business

When I started my web development business, I desperately needed a laptop. At that time in Bangladesh, laptops were the most expensive items to buy. I used to work on a desktop, then put all files on a floppy disc, later on a CD, and after that used a pen drive to show them to clients. I really wanted to work on a laptop so I could display them directly. Anyway, I worked on some projects and earned money.

In this business, my role was to communicate with the client when they expressed interest in working with me. First, I provided a project proposal with a flow diagram and discussed with the client whether they wanted to make any changes. Then I assured them that we would keep the design changes without any extra fee unless they liked them and gave the green light to start. Then I handled the programming, and my work partner handled the design. We combined our work and then presented it to the client.

Before starting the work, I always took 50% of the project money once the client agreed to the flow chart. I have seen that those who have no problem giving me the money at the start of the work pay in full. But people who don't want to pay first actually don't pay at the end.

I have asked my freelance marketing team to bring a successful project. If they do, I will pay 30% of the project money to them. Very few were successful in that work. It's not always their problem; sometimes the problem was on my end.

But my tendency was always to give priority to my business partner. I know I am by nature a leader. So I controlled myself not to overpower my business partner's opinions. Later, I found that my decisions were actually better. When I listened to them, I actually lost money, and I finally stopped the business.

Ramadan Planning for Ladies

Ramadan planning. Ladies, our plan is different from that of men and children. Let's try to figure out whether we can pray Taraweeh salat in Masjeed? If yes, do we have to go alone or take someone with us? In that case, we need to talk with them and make a good plan. If not possible in Masjid, then at home? If at home, then when will be the suitable time? Can we pray Tahajjud salat? How are we going to manage time? Make time before serving seheri food. Every day, are we going to recite the Quran? If yes, then when? Make a plan for a time so that we can always keep that time free from other work.

Now let's plan the food. For every Iftar meal, make one special dish. The rest should be fruits, Sarbat/Sarbet, and whatever is available at home. For Sehery, keep the regular meal. For a Bangladeshi family, that means rice, daal, veg, and protein.

And don't forget to plan for sleep. It's very important. Plan when you can get some sleep and stick to that time, whether you can sleep or not. At least take a rest on the bed.

Biography 328: Controlling weight

People who are in good health have no idea how far a person will go to lose weight.

Since my teenage years, I have been trying to control my food intake and started exercising. I have tried many methods I found online, were suggested by friends and family, and were suggested by doctors and nutritionists. I have tried keto, among others. All of them work at first, but my body finds a way to adapt and I start gaining weight.

My doctor gave me Ozempic to lose weight. After controlling my food intake and doing some light exercise, I was still gaining weight. I tried for months, but my weight kept going up. So the doctor stopped it. I am still having trouble with my weight. I didn't stop trying. I will keep trying. But that doesn't mean I will be disheartened. I am still overweight. From my perspective, maybe it is me. If I have to live with that, I will.

Bus stoppage in the snow

In the winter, Toronto always gets some snow. But because of the warm weather, it melted soon. This year, 2026, was different. Due to climate change, winter became colder, longer, and brought lots of snow.

The City of Toronto did a much better job this year. Still, there is plenty of room to improve. They must clear bus stoppages as a priority, and the area must be cleaned properly so there won't be any blockages to getting on the bus or the sidewalk. There should be enough salt to prevent melted snow from making the area slippery.

Biography 327: If you get burnt

When working in the kitchen, it's obvious that you will burn your hand sometimes. At that time, I was very new to the kitchen, and one day I burnt my hand. It was my parent's house. So after burning, I stopped working completely and tried to take care of my hand. But I couldn't find any way to make it feel better. For hours, I felt burning in my skin. I had to put my hand in a bowl of cold water. When I took my hand out of the water, it started burning again. Even though the water was at normal temperature, I had to change it to stay calm.

As I couldn't find a way, people who learned about my problem started giving me suggestions. One said to put potatoes on it, another suggested toothpaste (just to clear, never do this; toothpaste will do more harm), put salt in the water, spray spirit (you can spray deodorant or perfume), put Vaseline/gel (again, this is harmful), etc.

I tried almost everything. I found that spraying spirits works like magic. The next helpful idea was to add salt to the water. It helps reduce the pain. The rest of the suggestions didn't work at all.

Decoration with light.

Bangladesh's national fish is Hilsha. I guess somebody made that with lights.

Street lighting decoration in Bangladesh isn't very new. People used to decorate with lighting when they had a marriage ceremony at home. It was a bit expensive. Then the government used to decorate the cities with lights on Independence Day or Victory Day. Then on Eid days and other occasions. With time, this has become an art.

When you assume something, especially if it's negative, don't share it with anyone. Others may believe it and start having negative feelings. Stay good, even on social media

When social media first started, I actually found it good. We can connect with our friends, families, and other people too if we like their thoughts. Then a huge population joined social media. They found that they could reach anyone they couldn't in real life. Their mindset is that they can abuse anyone they like because some people laugh at them and give them support. These kinds of people have no civic sense, no humanity in mind. They might not do this much in the physical world because they might face consequences, but on social media they can hide behind a fake ID or a virtual image

So, the social media platform that was very strong became very dirty. Some good things are still going on, and some good groups and people are still there. But it has lost its safety and goodness.

Biography 325: Because I am following the rule.

My father has given me a ride many times on his bike or motorcycle. I always felt he drove very carefully and smoothly. He started driving a car in Saudi Arabia. Again, I have noticed he drives carefully. I think he has had only 2 accidents in his life, and in both, he was not at fault.

I have started driving in Canada. From the very beginning, I drive carefully and smoothly. In this country, when it is written Max 50k, people drive at 60k. Police consider up to 10k/20k. I always drive 50k in that situation. I feel the rules are made for safety, and everybody should maintain them. So I always see other drivers get angry. They pass my car, giving me an angry look. Not because I am breaking any rule, but because I am following the rule.

Winter Storm

My phone is giving me big alerts about the upcoming winter storm. I was wondering what I can do about it. My main concern is hydro power. If we have electricity, hopefully we will survive well, because our house might be warm then. But if we don't have power, we will be in an extremely cold situation within a few minutes. We can't stay like that. We have to go to a shelter. Here is another issue: if we get 30-50 cm of snow, no vehicle can rescue us. All will get stuck in the snow. So how can we go out, or can anything come to rescue us? If the storm wipes out the house, the situation will be much worse. I hope we won't fall into that situation.

May Allah protect us, always.

Local Temporary Shaheed Minar

In Bangladesh, people build many local temporary Shaheed Minars to honour those who gave their lives to keep Bangla as the national language. I was watching one of our local Shaheed Minars. Photo credit goes to my brother-in-law, Ashique.
