Biography 256: Korma

Eid means happiness. My mom used to cook Polao (Fragrant Rice), Korma (Chicken with sweet yogurt), Kabab, etc. I loved her Korma. I remember that, on one Eid, I ate polao with Korma too many times, and before the guests came, everything was finished. By the way, I wasn't alone who ate Korma. Mom had to cook again. It was difficult to cook for a long time in the kitchen during summer hot weather. For me, Eid means I have to eat Korma made by my mom.

Nowadays, I always try to make Korma in Eid. But my one never tasted like my mom's.

Whenever I get an invitation to Eid, I ask, did you make Korma? People may think, they have made some items, still I am looking for Korma, how greedy. No wonder she has gotten lots of extra weight.

Biography 97: Eid Celebration

Eid Celebration is the biggest festival for Muslims and Bangladeshis. I have celebrated Eid in various ways according to my age, location, changing social cultures etc.

The Saudi Bangladeshi Eid was inviting Muslims from different countries who are friends, colleagues or neighbours. And make delicious festival Bangladeshi meals at home and enjoy dinner together.

In Bangladesh, I enjoyed it in a little different way. When I was a kid, parents use to let their kids play around the neighbourhood area. At least that was the given range of area to go around. Obviously, some kids maybe break that rule and parents never get to know about that. Especially boys. I never did. On Eid day my school friends (Girls) came to our house, they eat some festival sweets in a very small amount and take me with them. Then we all went to another girl's house and eat food and pick the girls. This way our group became bigger and we enjoyed different kinds of delicious food mainly sweets from all moms. We liked to do that and this was our kind of Eid celebration in that area. Now a day parents don't feel safe letting their kids go out without any adults. So, this culture is no more in our area.

In one Eid, my dad took us to "Shishu Park" an amusement park. To get on every ride we had to stand in lines for hours. My dad promised, he will never go out on Eid.

When my older sister started studying at the university, her friends were all around the city. She use to take rickshaws and visit her friend's house with me. I became her friend's friend too.

In my university life, I found many of my classmates are from different parts of Bangladesh. During the Eid vacation, they use to go to their parent's homes. So, we who were from Dhaka city used to meet on Eid day and eat homemade delicious festival meals.

When I have started to live on my own, I use to prepare some special dish and take it to my parent's house to celebrate Eid. My sisters also make something and contributed. It's a kind of potluck.

In Canada, I had made lots of different festival foods, so that my son can have the taste of Bangladeshi Eid. I invited friends and enjoyed the meal. And mostly I enjoy Eid putting Henna on my hand. Here, I mean in Canada for the first time I went to say Eid prayer in the Masjeed. In Canada, every masjeed has facilities for women. So, any woman can go to masjeed anytime to say prayers. I have also visited some of my friends' houses on Eid. They invited me to celebrate Eid.

Eid Mubarak

Today we are celebrating Eid Ul Azha in Canada. I have some plans to celebrate it. Like I thought I will clean and make the house spotless. I did the laundry. I thought I will make delicious food for Eid. I have made "Nurgesi Cofta". It's chicken keema with a staffed egg.

The way I'm achieving my goals, (only one from the to-do list) I don't know, what will happen with the rest of the lists. Like, put henna on hair and hand. Get well dressed. Communicate with everyone, go live on FB and greet Eid Mubarak. I have also invited my friend, I hope I will arrange everything well. Still, I have 3 full days to go on (3 days of Eid). Let's see.

Biography 50: Qurbani Eid in Saudi

In Saudi Arabia, there is an animal almost like a sheep. It's called Dumba. It has far or wool like a sheep. But it had more. I'm guessing that helps them to protect themselves from direct sunlight in the desert. Their tail is very fat, not like a goat or sheep.

In Saudi, it's very common in villages that when a guest visits, they cut a Dumba and make a meal. To cut or Jobeh Dumba only one man involves. In Bangladesh, we will need 3/4 people. What they do is one person tighten up the legs and put one foot on it to hold and then use one hand to hold the Dumba's head and put the knife on its throat.

One day I saw my dad brought two goats. It stayed a couple of days at home. At night it kept making sounds if no one stands with it. I thought it only wants my company. I use to give it leaves which dad brought for the goat.

In Eid ur Azha, my dad with his friends made the Qurbani. They hung the goat in the backyard with the fence. Then my dad took the whole day to cut it into pieces.

Every Eid I have seen my mom invited all the known people. They are from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Srilanka, Egypt etc. My mom made Bangladeshi food (Special ones to celebrate).

One day a guy also join us who wasn't on our invitation list. He's origin in Bangladesh but he is living in Saudi for generations. He doesn't know how to speak in Bangla. He was dressed up like a Saudi man. I mean he was wearing "Toap". It's like a maxi, mostly gents wear it in white colour. The common Saudi man's dress. This guest brought me a dress. It was a very beautiful expensive maxi for me. I wore it in Bangladesh too, later. He just wanted to meet with Bangladeshi people, on Eid day. He said, lots of things to me in Saudi, which I didn't understand.

Eid Mubarak

Eid Mubarak to you all.

I was so tired after Iftar, so to take rest I just wanted to take small nap on bed. But fall in sleep. As mom is sleeping, my son started celebrating the Eid. He opened the 7up bottle, tried to send sms to get an offer. open the Henna tube and colored his own hand. Then also make some design on my hand. Also tried to tide mosquito net for me, failed.

He really started making me feel like Eid. Thank you Son.

We faced traffic jam even in Eid Day

We have seen, before Eid, thousands of people were getting out from the Dhaka city. In high ways, traffic jam held in several places because of this pressure. Then in the Eid day Dhaka is almost empty and people can move easily from one place to another. Well this is true in day time. After the sunset, things get changed. I have faced traffic jam almost in every big road. What is this, how many people actually lives in Dhaka? I am sure survey didn't cover all.

Eid preparation

When you don’t have time and energy to make something at home

There are some thoughts and preparations are only for woman. Like Eid. What will be food menu, for that what are the things we have to buy, from where I can get the best in low price, from when I have to start preparation? When I have to complete what? What will be the full day program? Eid Dress for kid and ….. Cleaning home, decorate a bit etc. Why boys don’t join with woman to solve all of these?

May be I won’t do any of these… physically I am really not OK. But will try my best.

Did you get your Eid Dress?

Shafeen

Still, I didn't get my Eid dress. But my husband promised he will gave me one before Eid day.

You know, in my child hood and I have also heard from my mom that in her childhood, they use to brought Eid dress and hide it till Eid day, that no one won’t be able to see it before Eid. Because Eid dress has to be brand new and nobody will see it before Eid. For long time I knew that this is our culture… but when I was in upper class in school this tradition changed. Now a day kids brought dresses and show to their friends and family, to see what they got…

When I was a child I mean I was in primary school, I use to see after Eid, that all children are talking about how many dresses they got this year, some says 2, some 3 or some 4. I always keep quite in this kind of conversation, because I always got one dress in Eid.

But, may be Allah see this happens with me. Now a day my son gets 7 to 9 dresses in Eid. We gave one then his all uncles and aunts, grandfather and grandmother gives… so he gets a lot. So, for the rest of the year we don’t need to buy any dress for my son for outing.

Eid is coming

Shefeen took cloths for his mom

All Muslims, especially children always wait for the Eid, the big occasion in their life. But mostly business men wait for this occasion, in Bangladesh. In other part of the world, for Eid all prices goes down, business men give their product in fewer prices. Not in Muslim world, in other occasion of other religious people, like Christmas, Chinese New Year etc, all gives discounts and free products. But Bangladeshi businessmen didn’t believe in fewer prices, they only know, how it increase on every matter. If new budget are coming, increase the price, if flood came, increase the price, especially if Eid comes then do all year profit in one month.
