Gifts

Gifts from a kid's birthday

Gifts from a kid's birthday

I like gifts. I like to have them for every occasion, like birthdays, Eid, or any other celebration. That's why I try to give gifts to others, because that's one way to show my liking for them. Even if I sometimes get a gift I may never use, I still like having something.

Biography 313: "Obhinondon" (অভিনন্দন)

A kid was about three or four years old. His parent organized a birthday party. He doesn't have friends yet, so his parents invited their relatives and friends to be his companions. One of them brought a bouquet of flowers for him. After opening the door, the boy ran to his aunt, expecting a gift. But his aunt bought some flowers. She gave him those flowers, Tuberoses (in Bangla, Rajnigandha).

He took the flowers, threw them on the floor, and, while stamping on them, he was saying, "Obhinondon aanchhe, khelna anbe, chocolate anbe, ta na, obhinondon aanchhe!" (Translation: She brought Greetings/Congratulations, no toys, no chocolates, she brought Greetings/Congratulations). People couldn't understand what to do next.

Moral of the story: Always think about age when giving a gift.

Biography 275: Gifts

I like to receive gifts. I enjoy giving gifts to others, hoping that it brings them happiness as well. Maybe not.

When I started my job, I spent all of my first month's salary in four days, just by buying gifts for my parents and siblings. I hope they liked it. Maybe not.

As I had expended all my money, I had to take care of my daily expenses from my dad, just as I used to in my student life. My mom told me that Dad didn't like that. As I have started working now, I should have taken my responsibility by myself.

I understood. I never asked my dad for money again. Next time, I asked my mother for a loan when I started preparing to move to Canada. I have returned her money. Tried to send gifts to her and to my siblings whenever I could. I tried to send my mom monthly pocket money.

I hope they liked it. Maybe not.

But my mom liked it. Though she didn't spend that money on herself. She wanted to save those for me, in the hope that when I visit Bangladesh, she will spend on us.

I also tried to give gifts to others. Friends and families. In most cases, I felt they didn't like my gifts. Maybe not.

Biography 206: Flowers

I like flowers. When I started using a computer in the office, I used to search for and download pictures of flowers to make wallpapers. I needed more because I used to change the wallpaper every now and then. I didn't have a cell phone or digital camera to take pictures, so I had to download them from the internet. One of my colleagues, Anisul, noticed it.

Later, in his marriage ceremony, I gave him handicraft flower pots, which were designed with flowers in mud. I didn't notice that I gave him flowers. One day, he was talking about my gifts and said, "I know you like flowers; you used to download flower pictures, and you gave me gifts like that at my marriage ceremony." I remember, oh yeah, I chose the gift but didn't notice that it had the flowers too.

Biography 63: An airplane

Shafeen has made this toy

In Saudi Arabia, mostly I did is babysitting my youngest sister. I like kids. I always enjoy time with them. So, I enjoyed my time with my baby sister. She was with me like this for more than one year. Other than babysitting I also helped mom in swiping rooms, cleaning rice and lentils (Daal). On those days, we had to clean them before cooking.

My parents didn't buy me any toys. They did buy toys but didn't open the packet, they wanted to bring everything in Bangladesh intact. So, I took mom's empty perfume bottles, empty beautiful boxes or packets and turned them into toys. I had a small mirror too. But I didn't look at it much, as I was never a  conscious girl about beautification.

Before we finally returned to Bangladesh, one day my parents took me to a toy store and asked me to pick any toy. They told me that they wanted to give me a gift as I did a good job of babysitting. I wasn't ready. But an airplane gets my attention. I picked an airplane. It runs with batteries. Then it stopped and the glass of the plane opened to get down a fighter. It was a fighter plane. It made a noise like a fighter plane too. it was about one foot or more than one foot long. On those days it was an expensive one and my parents bought me that happily.

We brought that plane to Bangladesh. It was with me for a long time. Everybody played with it. My sister's son Tamim played with it too. But then I don't know why he broke it into pieces. Everybody laughed, he was just a kid. But actually, he broke my heart into pieces. What can I say to a kid. Later I throw it out.

Gift of the Magi

We all read about the "Gift of the Magi" in our college. What I have learned from there is sometimes you want to give or do something for the person you admire, care, respect, love, but finally you see you have chosen the wrong one or wrong timing and that gift became useless.

In my personal life, I have faced this many times. So, I felt really difficult to chose or do anything for anyone. Because I wasn't sure whether that person will like it or not or that may cause more trouble for them.

But I have enough. Now a day I chose whatever I like for them and made my mind that it doesn't matter whether they like it or not, I like it and that's enough.

But still, I wish...

Whenever I see or hear that anyone has gone anywhere, in my heart I say, I wish we could go with them too. When they return, in my mind I say again, did you bring anything for us.

Well, when I go out I can't take everyone (who might be interested to go) with us and I also couldn't bring gift for everyone.

But still, I wish...

Shafeen with his birthday gift

But my son had to wait for 12 months, because his birthday at December. And all of our family members also collect gifts (basically toys as he demands). So it became a very big fun day. You can see that on his face. All waits for my cooking ( J ) good day for them too, and me? If everyone is happy, I am happy too. Then we understood my work (arrangement) became successful.

Shopping

Shafeen and Tameem (my elder sister's son). Shafeen was 1 year and 7 months old. We were at Nandan, which doesn’t exist anymore.

Shopping cart is always Shafeen's responsibility

Shafeen liked tha penguin

My elder sister Sharmin

Like most of the woman, I like shopping. When I want to give me some gift, I give myself to go for shopping. Well only once I gave this gift to myself, it’s little expensive, you know. That day I went to Agora at RifleSquire, Dhaka. And I bought whatever I felt I need. On that day I shop for tk 13000. No much, you see. But I really bought some essential things for home, later which became very helpful, like nonstick deep fry pan, food weight machine etc.

My son liked shopping too. Actually he liked to run the shopping cart. But, now a day, he prefers to stay at grandmother’s house (maternal) to play and let mom go to shop alone. Good for both of us.

You should give gift to yourself

Shafeen at a shopping center

In this world, you have so many works, so many tensions, and so many goals to fulfill. So, when you complete any task, for achieve any goal or became tension free, you should give yourself a gift or a small treat. This might cross your budget but very helpful for your mind.

In our life we want everything, but real life doesn’t give us all. Some are easily achievable, but we don’t go for it because it will cost or take time etc. So, we never get all what our heart desires. So, when you want to give gift to yourself, you can give what your heart wanted for long time. This could be a spa, world tour, shopping, eating, sleeping, taking rest, watching movie etc.

I have given such gift to myself once. I went to agora and shop whatever I feel I need, and didn’t look at how much it cost. Finally I pay taka13000 for all shopping, nothing much, right?
