Biography 130: My College (Grade 11 and 12): Positive things

Previously I heard that Viqarunnisa noon college is one of the best colleges for girls in Bangladesh. I didn't understand the meaning of famous those days. But later wherever I went, when people heard that I am from this college, I always got some extra respect and benefit.

It has a huge compound. On one side they had school, then a big field and finally the college part. Still, I don't know, how many gates they have. On our college side, they had 2 big gates and the 3rd one was with a bank. Yes, we had a bank inside our college for our financial deposit. One of its doors was outside the boundary so general people can also come and do their transactions.

Our canteen is very famous for its delicious food. The canteen manager is a big chef. People used to hire him for big ceremonies (Marriage, parties or birthdays). His son did masters in the UK, then came back to Bangladesh and made his father's food business huge.

I liked their sports section. Girls could get training in many sports if they wanted to. In Dhaka, our college was the best in the volleyball games. They were good at table tennis too.

Our auditorium was very big, at a time thousands of students could join a program.

One of the tailors uses to take orders and deliver dresses for the students. They had ready-made dresses too.

The College library was good. When I had free time I use to sit over there. Just to pass the time. If anyone doesn't study but sits over there, no one is bothered.

After college, any teacher from college can do private coaching to the students inside the college campus. Maybe be inside the library or the girl's common room. It was very helpful so that students didn't need to travel from one place to another for private tuition. (Private tuition is a very common thing in Bangladesh).

Our classes were huge. Teachers use to use mic to take the class.

Students came from all over Bangladesh. Five division's stand marks (Top 20 students in a big area) girls were in the college. One of my friends said, previously she was curious to see them, oh, this is one of the top 20 girls. Now it was too many. She said I was getting tired of seeing meritorious girls.

I came from a government school. Our school was a good school. But I really didn't have any idea, why people run for a good college. But after coming to Viqarunnisa noon college, I understood, why. The way the teachers were taking class, I was amazed. They know their topic very well and are well up to date. They teach girls so many things which weren't in the book. When they speak, you know their knowledge is very deep.

Another good thing I found is that in this college, girls have the power of voice. They can go to the principal Hamida Ali any time and talk.

If any girls suggested any good teacher who is in Dhaka, the principal will bring them to the college. If any girl complains about anything, she will go by herself to check it out and will take action. She also knew how to manage this big amount of fearless girls.

I remember one day teachers selected girls' college captain by themselves. Some students didn't like it. They started wearing black batch with their dress. The principal called them and ask why don't like this idea, then ask to give them 3 months to prove if they can manage girls. The girls agreed. 3 months was huge for us. After 3 months girls didn't have the energy to fight on this issue, it was somehow accepted. Those two girls were polite with all, so no one make any issue with them.
