ওরা কোথা থেকে এসেছে? (They came from where?)

তখন '৮৮ এর বন্যা চলছে, রাস্তা তো ডুবেছেই, সেই সাথে আমাদের বাসার নীচ তলা হাটু পানিতে ডুবে গেছে। বলা বাহুল্য খাবার পানির রিসার্ভ ট্যাংকিও রেহাই পায়নি।

চারপাশে পানি, রাস্তায় নিয়মিত নৌকা চলাচল করছে। আমরা নৌকায় করে মেইন রোডে যাই।

অনেক কষ্টই সহ্য করা যায়, কিন্তু পানির কষ্ট সহ্য হয় না। তখন খাবার পানি যোগার করা ছিল সবচেয়ে কষ্টের। এসময় দেখতাম, ২০-২৫ বছরের ছেলেরা ট্রাকে করে বড় বড় ড্রামে পানি এনে মেইন রোড থেকে দিত। বাসা থেকে সবাই যার যার মতোন বালতি, হাড়ি নিয়ে সেই পানি যোগার করতো। ওদের ঐ পানি দিয়ে পুরো এলাকার লোক বেঁচে ছিল। 

আমি ভাবতাম এরা কারা? কথা থেকে পানি নিয়ে আসে?
আম্মা বললেন, এরা ভার্সিটির ছেলে, ওয়াসা থেকে পানি নিয়ে আসে সবার জন্য ...

That was the time of flood from 1988. The flood water didn't cover the road only, also houses. Ground floor from our building was flooded with water near knee level. And you can guess our water reserve tank also get drown with this flood water.

Almost the whole city was get drown in to the water. The roads became the path of boats. We had to take boat to go the main road.

You know, we can adjust with many problems, but water problem. On those days, our main problem was to collect drinking water. The only source of clean water was from main road. Some 20 to 25 years boys use to bring trucks with big water drums of clean water. All the families had to collect them with their bucket bowl etc. The total area was lived on that water source.

I thought who are these boys? From where are they collecting water?

My mom replied, "They are from the University and bringing water for all from the Government water purifier system"
