Hindi song: Ye mera Dil

From the movie "Don 2".
Movie performance: Shahrukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan.

This is a remix of the old movie.

Lyrics with English Translation:

Yeh mera dil yaar ka deewana My heart is crazy for my lover

Deewana deewana pyar ka parwana It's like a moth to the flame of love

Aata hai mujhko pyar mein jal jaana I know how to burn in love

Mushkil hai pyare tera bachke jaana It's very hard for you to escape from here

Yeh mera dil yaar ka deewana My heart is crazy for my lover

Yeh mera dil yaar ka deewana My heart is crazy for my lover

Dil woh chahe jise Whomever my heart likes

Chahe jise usse paaye It attains that person

Pyar woh yaar ke joh When it comes to love

Naam pe hi mitt jaaye It's sacrificing in the name of your lover

Dil woh chahe jise Whomever my heart likes

Chahe jise usse paaye It attains that person

Pyar woh yaar ke joh When it comes to love

Naam pe hi mitt jaaye It's sacrificing in the name of your lover

Jaan ke badle mein Instead of my life

Jaan loon nazrana I'll take your life as a gift

Yeh mera dil yaar ka deewana My heart is crazy for my lover

Deewana deewana pyar ka parwana It's like a moth to the flame of love

Pal pal ek hulchul Every moment there is a commotion

Dil mein ek toofan hai There is a storm in the heart

Aane ko hai woh manzil That destination is about to come

Jiska mujhe armaan hai For which I've wished

Pal pal ek hulchul Every moment there is a commotion

Dil mein ek toofan hai There is a storm in the heart

Aane ko hai woh manzil That destination is about to come

Jiska mujhe armaan hai For which I've wished

Bhoolega na tujhe I'll never forget

Dil ka yeh takrana The collision of our hearts

Yeh mera dil yaar ka deewana My heart is crazy for my lover

Deewana deewana pyar ka parwana It's like a moth to the flame of love

Aata hai mujhko pyar mein jal jaana I know how to burn in love

Mushkil hai pyare tera bachke jaana It's very hard for you to escape from here

Yeh mera dil yaar ka deewana My heart is crazy for my lover

Yeh mera dil yaar ka deewana My heart is crazy for my lover

Different government systems in Canada

Some countries in South Asia and other parts of the world are ruled by one governing body. So, for everything, one governing body is responsible.

The Canadian government system is a little different from this. Here, we have municipal government (police, traffic, city constructions, etc, are their responsibility). Then we have the premier and the provincial government (their duty is healthcare, education, etc.). Finally, we have the federal government (their duty is the security of the country, the budget for all provinces, etc.).

In Ontario, different governments are ruled by various parties. The city is run by an NDP supporter mayor, the Provincial government is run by the PC/Conservative party, and the Federal is run by the Liberals.

Now you know in which situation which party is to blame or support.

Oppression

Mullaly, Bob. The “Web”: The Multiplicity, Intersectionality, and Heterogeneity of Oppression

Generally, we observe that in a society, there is less Oppression where we have more multiple identities (Like skin colour and gender).

In a society, people have multiple identities, and they intersect and overlap each other. That’s why the same Oppression doesn’t work with all people similarly. Bullying doesn’t work in the same way for all students. A black child gets bullied in a different way than a white kid. Generally, people aren’t aware of any oppression unless they become victims of it, like labour issues.

Oppression starts when a person or a group of people with a shared identity want to live better; they don’t care to put pressure on others who have another common. For example, White Christians decided to take over land and enslave other humans to benefit their country.

Models of Multiple Oppression

Sociologists agree that most oppressions are multi-faced.

Single Stand Model: This oppression is formed for one single reason. Like Marxists believe in one single Oppression, the “Worker group oppression.” It doesn’t matter whether the person is a man or woman, black or white.

Parallel Model: This oppression is formed for multiple reasons, which run parallel. And this kind of Oppression attacks a particular group, like sexism, mainly against women. However, this model also has some limitations.

Intersectional Model: When people of different identities come together, their identities intersect, and that forms the Intersectional Model of Oppression. Class, gender, race, and age can cross at the same time. This model of Oppression doesn’t discuss the hierarchy of Oppression. It assumes all oppressions are equal.

The web of Oppression: This means a person is at the center of different Oppressions, like gender, race, etc. Here, people cannot choose this position like a father’s position. This position on the web is our identity. It can change, too.

For Analysis, sociologists need to be careful about all intersections of Oppression, how they react in the intersections, which Oppression dominates, and why. Multy Oppression is very complex. For example, someone gets raped. She was a woman, black, a worker, unmarried, poor, etc. Here, lots of oppression intersects with each other. Here, the hierarchy of Oppression can not be measured by only numbers.

Heterogeneity with Oppressed group: There are various kinds of Oppression. Like Classism (This Oppression has a significant impact in society, where people are classified by their wealth), Racism (Here people believe that human ability is determined by race), Sexism (Set of the community assumes that Oppressed women), Heterosexism (Commonly after birth society identify human as a male or female, but there are other versions too like gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. This Oppression goes against them), Ageism (When age divided the society in power, ability, respect, etc.), and Ableism (Oppression against the disabled person)

Hindi song: Dil Keya Karein

This is a beautiful remix of a song from the film Julie. The original singer is Kishor Kumar. The music is by Rajesh Roshan, and the Lyrics are by Harindranath Chattopadhyay.

I liked it.

Lyrics with English translation:

Dil Kya Kare Jab Kisi Ko, Kisi Se Pyaar Ho Jaye

Jane Kahan Kab Kisi Se, Kisi Ko Pyaar Ho Jaye

Unchi – Unchi Deewaro Si, Is Duniya Ki Rasmein

Na Kuch Tere Bas Mein Julie, Na Kuch Mere Bas Mein

( What does the heart do when someone falls in love with someone

Don’t know where someone falls in love with someone

These customs and rules of the world are like tall walls

There is nothing in your control, Julie and me)

Jaise Parvat Pe Ghata Jhukti Hai

Jaise Saggar Se Lehar Uthti Hai

Aisi Kisi Chehre Pe Nigaah Rukti Hai

Rok Nahi Sakti Nazron Ko, Duniya Bhar Ki Rasmein

Na Kuch Tere Bas…..

( Just like clouds come over on a mountain

Just like waves rise up in the ocean

It's the same way our gaze struck one face

Not all customs and rules of the world can’t stop these gaze

There is nothing in your control, Julie and me)

Aa Main Teri Yaad Mein Sabko Bhula Doon

Duniya Ko Teri Tasveer Bana Doon

Mera Bas Chale To Dil Cheer Ke ***ha Doon

Daud Raha Hai Saath Lahoo Ke, Pyaar Tera Nas – Nas Mein

Na Kuch Tere Bas….

( Let me forget about everyone in your memories

Let me make this world like your picture

If it's in my control, I can cut out my chest and show you my heart

Your love is running in my every vein with blood

There is nothing in your control, Julie and me)

Biography 212: Taking lunch in the office.

I don't take help from others as long as I can. When I started working, I couldn't make time to prepare my lunch—I never did before. I didn't ask my mom (I was living with my parents) to do so. I decided to eat outside. I like outdoor food. But now I know very well that no matter which country you live in, try to eat homemade food as much as possible.

So, I started enjoying my discoveries. Each day, I went to a new restaurant, food store, or convenience store and tried something new. Those were not healthy foods, but I had sound health to absorb them all.

Some of my colleagues used to bring food from home. At lunchtime, they used to sit together and take their lunch. I started buying from outside and then joined them. But some of them didn't like this unhealthy procedure. They insisted that I should bring food from home. But I didn't want to put effort into it and not put extra work on my mother.

One day, one of my colleagues, Jahangir Alam, became very angry with me. On that day, I ordered a bun stuffed with meat. It was pretty oily, and I wanted to discover how it tasted. But Jahangir shouted at me. What are you doing? Do you want to kill yourself? I won't let you eat these. He didn't let me eat! I was kind of scared of his anger.

Now, please don't take it wrong. He had his girlfriend in those days, and he is happily married to her now, has kids, and lives in the UK. In those days, he used to share his love stories with us, such as how it started, what happened in Nandan amusement park, a story about ordering food, some problems that he faced during marriage, his sister taking care of him like his mother, etc. He came a little late on my birthday with a bunch of yellow roses. He said he wanted to give me yellow flowers as a sign of friendship. But he couldn't find it in the flower store. Finally, he had to run after a man selling flowers and got all for me. He used to say this whenever he saw me, "Shahana aar korona banana. (it's in Bangla)" I still don't know what bahana (Excuse) I made ever.

We, all colleagues, became friends (at least, I thought so) and always try to stay connected. We are in a FB group; previously, we were in a Yahoo group.

Because of him, that night, I went to my mother's. I was expecting my mom to say no because she was busy and wouldn't be able to prepare my lunch in the morning. So, I would be able to tell them, no, I can't, let me eat from outside. But my mom agreed within a second. She said I prepare lunch for your father every morning; I can prepare one more lunch box for you, too. It's easy.

Trust me, I didn't like that. I wanted to try different foods from outside.

My mom started giving me lunch in a hot pot. It was a full meal: rice, curry, salad, etc. The Food was delicious. I stopped eating at restaurants. Maybe Jahangir just helped me not to ruin my health, which I did later.

Who is happy?

Unmarried people are not happy. They want to get married. They want someone permanently in their life.

Married people are not happy with their marriages. They think this is the biggest mistake they have ever made.

Then who is happy?

Divorced women.

Yes, I am saying it's the women who become happy after divorce. Because men understand very shortly how precious their married life is, no matter what they say. They generally get married within 2/3 months after getting a divorce.

You will see that women don't get remarried quickly. They can't forget about that trauma so quickly.

Social Inequality

Little, W. (2016). Introduction to Sociology: 2nd Canadian Edition.

Social Inequality

Social Inequality is the social distribution of power. People play different roles in society because of their different social powers. We can see unfair social resource distribution among different layers of society. Equal distribution in society means unequal resource distribution won’t harm any personal life. Inequality doesn’t always happen on a personal level. It also gets set on a social level in a systematic way. We can easily see that rich people don’t build their houses in poor people’s neighbourhoods. Here, the main factor is money to make the differentiation. The social class system was developed based on people’s property. There will be two kinds of classes over here: owner and labour.

Social Inequality and Mobility in Canada

Social class systems are generated within the same group of people. These groups can be formed for different reasons like occupation, education, wealth, etc. The standard of living is a common element used to check class status. Canada is known for its standard of living. But there are people who don’t have enough money to have a standard place to live. In Canada, only 10% of the population has a very high standard of housing. And they had most of the country's resources and wealth. There is a misunderstanding that in Canada, most people are middle earners. Fewer are rich and poor people. However, in the middle-income group, a lot of people struggle with their expenses to afford a quality house and buy good food. Social mobility occurs when people change their social status according to their earnings. Like in Canada, we have both Upward mobility (When someone’s earnings increase) and Downward Mobility (When earnings decrease).

Global Stratification and Inequality

Global Stratification and Inequality is a crucial area of study, focusing on power and resource distribution worldwide. The 19th century saw a significant shift in living standards due to industrialization in Europe, which improved the lives of many in Europe and America. However, this also led to a global inequality in power and resource distribution, with non-industrialized areas experiencing a worsening of conditions for the poor.

Theoretical Perspectives on Social Inequality

Here, the writer gave us an example of a basketball game. We can see different teams playing basketball, and not all are getting the same payment. This unequal distribution can be studied from a Social Perspective. There are 3 kinds of Social Perspectives. Like, functionalism, critical sociology, and interpretive sociology. In Functionalism, we discuss how different parts of society work. In Critical Sociology, we check how resources are not equally distributed. In Interpretive Sociology, we discuss how individuals’ everyday work in society. People mostly interact with those whose race, wealth, religion, or food matches them. This is called symbolic interaction. Here, the cultural assets determine how the language or food will be used by the future group. Cultural capital is like an investment.

Documenting recipe

People grow up with many childhood memories, and food takes a significant place among them. What we liked or used to eat, stays with our memories. On many occasions, we try to recreate those memories. Sometimes, it becomes impossible because we don't have the recipe for that food.

Nowadays, YouTubers are doing a great job of creating recipe videos. Their intention may be to earn money, but this way, many traditional and new recipes are documented in videos and sometimes in blogs. I really appreciate it.

Both my mother and I started cooking by following Siddika Kabir's recipe. She was a legend. I hope somebody will translate all her recipes and make them available to people from all over the world.

Biography 211: Whistle from the train

In my childhood, we lived near the Kamlapur Railway Station in Dhaka, Bangladesh. From our apartment, we always listened to the train whistle. We could see trains from our rooftop.

Later, when I started living in Saskatoon, I could hear the whistle of the train again. The rail line crossed the city.

Then, I moved to Ontario. Now, again, I could hear the train whistle. The train station is near our house.

My grandfather used to work on the Railway. I have never seen him. But when I search for a job, whenever I see a job position in the Railway, I always try to see if I could fit in. I just wanted to continue like my grandfather.

Now I think I have some connection with the train. Otherwise, why does the whistle always follow me?

"A Deafening Silence," Nancy Macdonald (2015)

In the article "A Deafening Silence," Nancy Macdonald (2015) wrote about Indigenous people's suffering in Canada. To elaborate on the feelings of the Indigenous people, she first told us about some current issues in the Indigenous community. For example, the writer mentioned many suicide cases (The youngest person who committed suicide is an 11-year-old boy), MMIWG: missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (From 1995, more than 800 women and girls have been murdered or missing), poverty, children's school dropping, a considerable percentage of Indigenous people in jail, poor health conditions, and poor living standards (Indigenous people are living like third to fourth world living condition). Then, she gave the audience some examples of the political leader's commitment to solving Indigenous people's problems and how much the Indigenous people had gained from those commitments. The truth is Indigenous people didn't gain much from those who have the power in Canada. That's why many activists are working hard to make the change. That's why the writer said, "The Idle No More movement initiated a massive push for change, and a huge number of activists have been channelling their energy to get-out-the-vote initiatives like Indigenous Rock the Vote." (Nancy Mcdonald, 2015, p. 3)

The writer Nancy Macdonald mentioned some quotations from different Indigenous scholars, including Wab Kinew (an author and university administrator), Hayden King (an Indigenous scholar), and Justice Murray Sinclair (the Truth and Reconciliation Commission chair), to support her points. Justice Murray Sinclair knew that the federal government would be the slowest to react and take any necessary actions to solve problems for the Indigenous community. However, the government is primarily responsible for this discriminative situation with the Indigenous community. Now, the only thing that can move them from their current policy is the vote; if voters want to change the case, the government will. Because they need the votes to keep the power, that's why it's essential to educate everyone about the Indigenous crisis. Then, more people will become aware of giving the right to the Indigenous community. The Federal government will have no choice but to take the right policy to treat the Indigenous community. Hayden King mentioned that Canadians have become very sensitive to humanitarian issues in the world. This attitude is excellent, but at the same time, they do not care about the Indigenous problems. All humans should always be treated the same, but Canadian decision-makers didn't include the Indigenous people in this issue. They have been fighting for a long time to achieve their right.

In English:

People say, they say that

My house is not good at all.

What house shall I construct?

In this empty space?

Thus says Hason Raja,

He will not build any house.

Where will Allah keep him,

Thinking so, he weeps.

Suppose I make a good house,

For how many days would I stay?

Glancing at the mirror,

I see my hair has turned gray.

If Hason had known earlier,

For how long would he live,

He would have built a proper house,

And made it colourful.

The teen girl was waiting for 2 months

The doctor told us that my father's kidneys were not working. My dad asked what we could do. The doctor said my dad had to have a small operation and put something on his hand (I forgot the name), and through that, he had to dialysis his kidneys every week.

The doctor recommended that we go to Dhaka Medical College. It is a very small operation that will take little time, and we can save money this way.

In those days, Shafeen was a toddler. I used to carry his diapers, food, and dresses in my backpack. Then, I held his one hand (I didn't want him to run here and there), and with the other hand, I used to hold my dad. Shafeen never disturbed me while I was busy with his grandfather, moving from one place to another, one hospital to another. I just had to clean him, feed him, and keep an eye on him.

We made an appointment for the operation and went there on the due date. Other patients were also waiting for their operations. Everyone has a serial number.

Beside me, there was a teenage girl who was in pain in her lower abdomen. She was saying I can't stand the pain anymore. Doctors couldn't find out what exactly happened, so they came here, and the doctor said they would open her up to know and fix her. But she has been here for two months. Her operation date has been changing one after another. No doctor is making her operation. She was saying she would cut her belly with a blade by herself.

Her sister was there with her. She was exhausted from this extended time of waiting without any treatment or operation. She said that every week they waited here, then at the end, the doctors said, no, today they won't be able to operate on her. She said that at home, her husband and kids also became impatient. How long can she stay with her sister this way? She was saying she would leave her sister alone here. By hearing this her sister (the patient) started crying.

The sister was telling me. Here, in this medical college, they give free food of good quality. People eat them, and then they make the washroom dirty. The cleaners clean it so perfectly every morning that it looks like a new one. But people don't use it properly, and in a short time, they make the whole washroom dirty. She can't stay like this.

My father was the second last person to operate on that day. That means that after him, that teen girl should go for an operation. My father's operation was successful. I meet with him and take him back home. While returning home, I overheard two young doctors saying to each other, one said, I won't operate this; you do. Others saying no, I don't want to. I will cancel the operation date.

I couldn't say anything; it's their matter; they knew better. But I felt very sad. I wish I could tell them, please look after this poor girl. She has been waiting for a long time. She needs you guys' attention.

Song: Chery Chery lady

 Singer: Thomas AndersDieter Bohlen

Band: Modern Talking

Song: Chery Chery Lady (Chery means dear, sweetheart).

These singers sing the song with the same voice quality after years and look better now.

This is from Disco of the 80's Festival, Russia, 2019

When he was young, Peters Pop-Show 30.11.1985

Lyrics
Oh, I cannot explain
Every time it's the same
Oh, I feel that it's real
Take my heart
I've been lonely too long
Oh, I can't be so strong
Take the chance for romance
Take my heart
I need you so
There's no time I'll ever go

Cheri, cheri lady
Goin' through a motion
Love is where you find it
Listen to your heart

Cheri, cheri lady
Living in devotion
It's always like the first time
Let me take a part

Cheri, cheri lady
Like there's no tomorrow
Take my heart, don't lose it
Listen to your heart

Cheri, cheri lady
To know you is to love you
If you call me baby
I'll be always yours

I get up, I get down
All my world turns around
Who is right? Who was wrong?
I don't know
I've got pain in my heart
Got a love in my soul
Easy come, but I think
Easy go
I need you so
All the times I move so slow

Cheri, cheri lady
Goin' through a motion
Love is where you find it
Listen to your heart

Cheri, cheri lady
Living in devotion
It's always like the first time
Let me take a part

Cheri, cheri lady
Like there's no tomorrow
Take my heart, don't lose it
Listen to your heart

Cheri, cheri lady
To know you is to love you
If you call me baby
I'll be always yours

Cheri, cheri lady
Like there's no tomorrow
Take my heart, don't lose it
Listen to your heart

Cheri, cheri lady
To know you is to love you
If you call me baby
I'll be yours

Cheri, cheri lady
Like there's no tomorrow
Take my heart, don't lose it
Listen to your heart

Cheri, cheri lady
To know you is to love you
If you call me baby
I'll be yours

Biography 210: The aroma was nice

Sometimes, we do good work and expect something good in return. Then, we fail to have it; instead, we get humiliated for that. But we should keep doing good, no matter what results come. Because Allah is counting all your good deeds, and you will get the result of it someday, in this life, after your death.

It's not an example, just a tiny thing that happened in my life. I went to Shamsunnahar Hall, The University of Dhaka's women's dormitory. My friend Ratna got a bed to stay because her home was outside Dhaka city. Shumi and I didn't get that chance because our home was in Dhaka. When we had whole-day classes, at noon, during the lunch break, we used to take a rest in Ratna's room.

There were three beds in the room, and Ratna had to share her room with two senior girls. It was good for her that she got help and was trained to live in the Hall. The room was quite big with a big balcony. Girls had their own burner to cook.

When I entered the room at noon, maybe I was starving—I don't remember—but I smelled something cooking, and it was good. So, I told them what you guys were cooking, and it smelt very nice. One senior girl showed me a burner. They were just warming up the oil, and I smelled only the oil. They laughed out loud. They thought I did this to impress them.

This doesn't mean I won't tell anybody whenever I smell something good. If anyone is cooking and you smell it nice, tell them. They will feel better. Giving joy to others is a very good thing. You never know who is going through which problem. Maybe just a small gesture will make someone's day. That's not a small thing.

Freeman, V. (2010). "Toronto Has No History!"

Freeman, V. (2010). "Toronto Has No History!" Indigeneity, Settler Colonialism, and Historical

A)      After reading the article, I was struck by the untapped potential of Toronto's rich urbanization history of Indigenous people. This history, if properly recognized and celebrated, could be a powerful tool to attract tourists, offering a unique perspective on the city's past. Currently, when newcomers arrive in Canada or prepare for citizenship, they are primarily exposed to the history of European settlers, a narrative that overlooks the significant contributions of Indigenous communities.

B)      “He explained that according to tradition, Toronto had been one of the stopping places of his ancestors on the Great Migration of the Anishinaabeg from the east coast.  “We stayed quite a while,’ he added, but “in 1847, we were removed from this place.” He paused before continuing somewhat bemusedly: “I’m asked to come and celebrate this city, but the city itself kind of moved us out.” (Freeman, 2010, P. 21). Here, we can get information that Indigenous people had built the city and were removed from their land. After a long time, they were called to celebrate the city, but they are the outsiders now.

“Yet historical memory is always fluctuating, contested, and precarious, especially in Toronto, a city of newcomers, where half its current residents were born outside of Canada” (Freeman, 2010, P. 31). I found it very accurate. I was a newcomer, too. Now, become Canadian. I didn’t know about this Indigenous history in Toronto. Most people I know are newcomers; they also don’t know about it. I have met some aged white Canadians. Also, they never mention it or might not even know about the rich Indigenous history of urbanization.

No treat, no gift.

I try to send greetings on everyone's birthday. You know, those who let us remind them by social media. Unless they ignore my message. I don't want to text those who don't reply.

I can remember very few birthdays without any reminders, and I send greetings to them, too.

I only give gifts to those who treat me. No food, no gift.

I really don't understand how some people keep expecting gifts and greetings from me when they never send any greetings or treat me on my birthday or on theirs.

Bangla song: Sopne Taar Sathe Hoy Dekha

I liked Habib's songs because they were about enjoying life, not sad songs, though he changed his singing patterns. Maybe more people like that, but I don't like sad songs (mostly). I have enough sadness in my life. There is no need to borrow from others.

Singer: Habib Wahid

Album: Shono

Lyrics:

স্বপ্নে তার সাথে হয় দেখা, (I meet with her in my dream)

বসে বসে ভাবি, তা একা একা। (Thinking about it, alone)

সে যে স্বপ্নে আসে তবু (Though she comes in the dreams)

স্বপ্নের চেয়েও মধুর। (It's more sweet than a dream)

তাকে পাবার আশায়, (In a hope to have her)

দু'চোখ রাখা দূর বহুদূর। (Looking forward far away)

তার স্বপ্ন দেখে রাত চলে যায়,  (Spending whole night dreaming about her)

তারপর আসে ভোর, (Then the morning comes)

তারপর আমার ঘুম ভাঙে। (Then I woke up)

দেখি ব্যস্ততার শহর, (I watch the busy city)

অবিরাম ছুটে চলা, (Keep running)

একা একা কথা বলা। (Talking alone)

কত কিছু বলে ফেলা, (Saying so many things)

তাকে ভালোবেশে ফেলা, (Love her)

এ ভালবাসাতেই রোদ্দুর ! (This love is my sunshine!)

তার স্বপ্ন আধাঁরে ঘেরা নয়, (Dreams about her isn't in dark)

সোনালী রোদে ভরা, (It's covered with golden sunshine)

মেঘের আকাশ চাই না। (Don't want cloudy sky)

তার স্বপ্নে আছে তাঁরা! (They are in my dream)

বেসেছি ভালো তাকে, (I love her)

স্বপ্ন দেখার ফাঁকে। (While dreaming)

স্বপ্নের রং মেখে, (by covering dreams color)

মনেতে তার ছবি এঁকে। (Drawing her picture in my mind)

সে স্বপ্নের চেয়েও মধুর! (It's sweeter than the dream)

Biography 209: Token at the Science Library

Our department was in the Science Annex Building at the University of Dhaka. Beside our building, we had the Science Library building. We mostly go to that library for study.

There was a rule that we had to submit our bags and get a token at the entrance. When we got out, we returned the token and got our bags back. A young adult was responsible for this job.

I noticed that no matter how many ways I try to avoid touching that man's/boy's hand while taking or submitting the token, somehow, his hand touches my hand. It looks like a coincidence, but it can't be coincidental every time. I don't know, how he kept his figure, when I try to get the token, I touch him. And obviously, when he took a token from me, he would touch my hand. The way I gave him the token, like just holding at the corner of it, there was no reason to touch me while taking it back, but he would.

I won't say it's a significant harassment. In Bangladesh, many men touch women's bodies in public places, like while walking beside them, on the bus, or in the shop. I didn't like that attitude. I have visited six countries on two continents and have never faced this kind of harassment anywhere except Bangladesh.

I was thinking about how to avoid this token touching things. One day in Shamsunnahar Hall (a Women's dormitory), a senior student talked about it. She said she always put the token on the table so he couldn't touch her. When he tried to give the token, she asked him to put it on the table, and then she grabbed it from it. I liked her idea.

I started applying this method immediately. It worked! He looks very upset/disturbed by our attitude.

Song: You are my sunshine

But my favourite version is here on Instagram.

Lyrics:

The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me to love another
You'll regret it all some day

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me and love another
You have shattered all my dreams

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

In Search of a Perfect World - CBC Documentary

1.      Guatemala and Canada

A.     Based on the documentary, explain what is happening in Guatemala and how Canada is involved.

Guatemala’s government is taking land for mining from the Indigenous people, and most of the mining companies are Canadian. These mining companies had made deals with the Guatemalan government and gave them benefits, but the Indigenous people didn’t get anything, not even a notification.

B.     What can the Canadian government do to uphold Human Rights in Guatemala?

The Canadian government can ask the Guatemalan government to ensure that the compensation and agreement with the Indigenous people have been made; then, the work will start.

C.     Do you see any similarities between Indigenous Peoples in Guatemala and Canada? What are they?

Yes, there are similarities between the Indigenous people in Guatemala and Canada. In both countries, the land has been taken without the landowner’s Indigenous people’s permission, communication or even with any compensation.

D.     Are Indigenous Peoples “Equal Before the Law” in Guatemala? In Canada? Explain your answer.

Indigenous people are not getting “Equal Before the law” in Guatemala or Canada. In both countries, Indigenous people are losing their land without notice, communication, permission, or compensation, which they have owned for centuries. According to the United Nation’s declaration, they have equal rights as country inhabitants. But nowhere are they getting that right. If anyone asked for the right, they were stopped violently forever.

In Canada, it is a law that Indigenous people from Guatemala can sue a Canadian company for violating their human rights. Because Canadian companies operate from Canada, their work is accountable in Canada.

But the Canadian Indigenous people don’t have the same rights. They can’t sue any company that has taken their land.

2.      Refuges and Migrants

A.     Why do people flee?

There is a Myth that people flee for better living or to live in the first better country. But the reality is that people fly or migrants to save their lives; there is no option. If they return to their country, their lives will be in danger. They might get killed.

B.     What are the two types of rights that the documentary mentions in relation to Refugees and Migrants? Are they being respected? Why/Why Not?

Article 25 of the declaration: everyone’s entitled to a decent standard of living, and mothers and children need special care.

Article 14 of the declaration: the right to asylum.

None of them are respected, not even in the refugee camps regulated by the UN. The UN doesn’t provide enough funding or help to fulfil the requirements of the camp workers or volunteers.

Many political leaders wanted to keep the refugee camp as poor as possible. Because they think that the refugees will be discouraged from coming to the refugee camp.

Though, that is not working. To stop refugees, world leaders need to prevent violence in the countries. Because fleeing from any country isn’t any luxury, people do this because they don’t have any other option to survive.

3.      Using the Case of Turkey in the Film, answer the question, “Why is Freedom of Speech and Media” important?

Freedom of Speech and Media are essential because they tell the facts and truth about what is happening worldwide. The people in power, those who discriminate against others to achieve their own goals, don’t like that.

4.      What is your biggest takeaway on the Promise of Human Rights? How can we (as Community Workers) work to uphold Human Rights? Back up your assertions.

Human rights are not maintained for the Indigenous people not only in Canada but in other countries, too. The most significant takeaway from this video is that some greedy Canadians also discriminate against Indigenous people in other countries. People from different countries, Indigenous people, and Canadian Indigenous people should have the right to sue companies that take resources from the Indigenous land.

As a community worker, I can work with them and empower them. My first step would be to make more people aware of Indigenous people’s rights. I can share my knowledge with my family, friends, colleagues, classmates, etc. The more people are aware, the more chances the government will be pushed to work for Indigenous people. Because the government needs votes to win the election of power, they will care what the majority demands.
