The course CO1 Community worker and the world

 1)      Some of the main ideas and relationships that inform your ideas about the world: 

I am a religious person. I believe the creator created all of us, including humans, non-human animals, and other natural things. We are responsible for all creatures and nature (like water, mountains, etc.), benefiting from them and living together in harmony.

But we know, everybody doesn’t think like that. Some people only seek profit and believe that if their home or part of the earth stays well, they and the next generation will remain good. But the truth is that we all share this earth. If in any place we destroy anything, like nature, the whole world will suffer. For example, the glaciers are melting at the North Pole, and small islands are sinking underwater in tropical areas. 

2)     Whether or not the learning that you have done in this course or any of your other courses this semester has shifted the way you understand the world you live in, your identity, or your relationships: 

Before I joined the program C101 Community Worker, I thought a community worker’s job was to help people who are in need. After entering the program, I learned from the courses Introduction to Community Worker, Interpersonal communication, sociology, and human right that community workers empower people; they work with them, not for them. People who are in trouble already know what they need. They don’t need any outsider who doesn’t know about them and has never lived with their problem, who will come and tell them what they should have gotten. So, the community worker’s job is to help them to achieve what they need and support them where they need support. Sometimes giving them time and listening to them is the best medicine for a problem.

I still believe Canada is the best multicultural country on earth. No other government treats people from different communities in such a generous way as Canadians do. After joining the program, I know there are still many rooms to upgrade for Canada. I learned this from the Indigenous course as well as the other courses.

Need to make this world for Teens too.

 Computer games are made to get you addicted to them. No matter your age, once you start playing, you will be addicted to them. This game addiction isn't suitable for anyone. It may cause trouble to your eyes, brain, time, life, etc.

Teenagers don't have much to do. All playgrounds and entertainment systems are made for either kids or adults. Teenagers who are in the middle are missing in every event. Nothing is made for them; nothing is suitable for them.

So, obviously, the only entertainment left for them is computer games. Because of this game addiction, they are becoming more rude and misbehaved and don't want to learn anything but games.

We need to provide more work, entertainment, books, movies, etc. for teens. We need to engage them in our social work. Take them to the nature. Let them work with us to learn. This will help them learn about the real world and decide their future plans. We have to engage them with parents, kids, and the elderly. We need to create a world where they are also welcome. Let them use their creativity. We shouldn't box their mind and body with a screen. They are the future of the next generation.

Biography 225: To stay away from a student.

 I had a student. We made a three-month contract to teach the programming language ASP. He was supposed to pay me TK 1000 per month. He used to come to our home. I had a deal with my brother that he would let me use his room for this tuition. Every month, I would pay him TK 100. Because I didn't want to take him to my room. I have used my brother's desktop computer.

I followed a book to teach my student organized. I had a plan for how I would teach him the significant and necessary things of ASP.

I don't remember now, but he probably used to come to our house on weekends. I gave my full effort, and it seems he learned whatever lesson I gave him.

At the end of the month, he gave me half of my tuition fee, TK 500, and said, "Please keep this." I felt he wanted to say to me, "This is what you are worth." Anyway, I am not a person who argues with people. I just told him not to come the next day. This tuition session is over. Later I paid to my brother TK 100 as I had a deal with him. No matter what, I always try to pay back as I had the deal.

Probably, my stuent didn't expect this reaction. He was so surprise. Like, I suppose to agree with his 50% less attitude. He said, "if you don't teach me where I will go? Please don't be so harsh on me. Please keep teaching me. I won't listen to you. I will come to your house next week, no matter I many times you say no."

As I said, I didn't argue. I just kept quiet. But I really wanted to avoid any unwanted situation. I knew my colleague Tania had an extra room in her house; she kept it as a guest room. So, I requested her to let me sleep one night at her home so that I could avoid my student. He agreed with a big smile.

It became a one-night out with a friend. Her husband sometimes joined us, like a friend. The couple sometimes argued about things that made me laugh. For example, her husband opened the fridge and started saying, "Why didn't you cook those green bananas? Now they're becoming yellow. What should I do with those? Now eat those with your friend, etc." The way he was saying it made me laugh out loud. Tania was also laughing with me.

I slept in her guest room. She took care of me like a mother. She gave me a beautiful blanket to sleep with. She also called our other colleagues to let them know how I got scared of a student and hid in her house.

The next day, I came back home and was relieved that the student didn't show up.

The Climate Crisis

 Brym believes that the explanation of natural disasters is a myth. Discuss how human activities led to or worsened the environmental disaster(s) in the reading.

 

Brym explained that a robust and elite group made all the plans and decisions of people for centuries for New Orland and the poor black community who lived there. These powerful groups of people left the black community at high risk of death during the hurricane. For centuries, these powerful groups of people didn’t let charge the American Government for not taking responsibility and ensuring every citizen’s welfare responsibility. Because of this attitude, the Government didn’t take the relatively less expensive actions to save New Orlando, which other countries generally do and get good results. Some of these general actions could save and significantly reduce the number of deaths related to the hurricane. So, the writer believes that natural disasters are not myths, nor should we blame one person.

We can call this Environmental Racism.  Here, poor decisions had been made for the Black People during Hurricane Katrina.

 

How human activity minimized or prevented the impact of natural disasters in another context, i.e. Cuba.

 

Though the Cuban plan of action to take precautions for a natural disaster like a hurricane is relatively poor, it is somewhat effective, too. Let’s discuss them; first, they started educating people about the precautions against hurricanes in schools, colleges, and universities. So, the young generation started learning from an early age how to cope with hurricanes, like how to interpret the news broadcasts on storms, how to update themselves with the continuous broadcasts and how to measure its strength.

 

Next, Cuba arranges two days of yearly hurricane training sessions every May. In this training, they educate people on risk minimization, do some exercises that help evacuation and rescue events, measure future problems and encounters like trimming trees, check any weak points in a dam, and finally review and update all emergency plans.

 

Third, they organized a civil defence network to coordinate evacuation and rescue events at the neighbourhood level. One of the sister organizations of the Civil Defence Network is the Federation of Cuban Women. This sister organization goes door to door to ensure that the families have filled their bathtubs with water, taped windows, kept cars in the garage, unplugged electrical appliances and arranged adequate supply of batteries, radios, candles, matches, drinking water and food. The Federation of Cuban Women also creates lists of vulnerable people so that they can help during the evacuation.

 

Fourth, during the evacuation, the neighbourhood doctor also evacuated with the general people so that the doctor could help if needed. People take their valuable items with them during evacuation.

Fifth, the evacuation route or transportation and temporary housing facilities are set up in advance. Buses, trucks, ambulances, vans, helicopters, and even horsecarts are used to evacuate people.

 

Sixth, stores also prepare emergency food, water, and medicine in advance.

 

Seventh, the regular water supply was turned off to avoid spreading diseases.

 

We can call this Environmental Sociology. This means people understand environmental issues and take necessary steps through social structures.

 

COVID-19 has not only "lifted the veil" on injustice but has also revealed what is possible as we envision a new normal for a post-pandemic future. Discuss at least one way in which communities (local, national or global) can prepare for or prevent the devastating impacts of climate disaster.

 

From the Covid-19 pandemic, we understood that we couldn’t stay protected if we only thought about our protection. We must think about the world human community. If we can solve a problem everywhere (Like Covid-19), then only we can be safe from that problem.

The immediate solution to any climate disaster would be to be aware of the crisis. And to generate this awareness, we must educate people about it. Otherwise, neither the general people nor the government (Or elite group of people) will understand the importance of the climate crisis. As the Cuban government acted, we needed to educate from the beginning. That means we must educate young people in school and adults in the corporate world.

No homework

 I believe students shouldn't have assignments to complete at home (Homework). Whatever teachers want to teach should be done in the classroom. All work should be done at school time. Home time should be for enjoying and learning from real life. 

They might get assigned to do household work, like laundry, dishes, and preparing meals. They might also help mom or dad, clean the room and the whole house, fix things, create something for home, play with siblings or parents or alone, etc. They might also travel with the family to different places. 

After school, time should be spent on real-life training with surroundings, such as going to old-age homes to the elders, giving time to junior schools to help juniors, going to the hospitals to help doctors, nurses, and patients, and going to any office where they can help and do real office work. They can go to a shelter to help people who needed, help in community center and food banks.

We should merge school life book learning and real-life learning. Not take all of their time from their life. We should keep room for them to increase their creativity. We should teach them how to utilize their time. How to have good business ideas to start earning.

Biography 224: A new colleague

 A new colleague joined us. I found him very friendly—I mean overly friendly. He was laughing, talking, and moving like dancing everywhere. He went to every desk to make friends. He couldn't do well with me, or he wasn't interested in making friends with me.

His best friend became our project manager. He called her Bhabi (Sister in law). Giving her all kinds of help and suggestions. She became very dependent on him. He started going to her home during lunch break with her. Her house was nearby, so she used to go to her home on lunch break. She fed her well by making new delicious items. I overheard him saying that today's chicken salad was the world's best. I agree with him. Because she brought food to the office one day, which was very delicious.

Then, one day, I heard the project manager was fired. Because she can't work alone, she doesn't have the capability to manage projects. Can you guess who complained to the owner? Her best friend, our new colleague. I was thinking, at least for a free good lunch, he should have kept her as a friend.

Later, I heard from somewhere else. Someone said to all that I don't know how to design a website. I take help from ready-made designs. I never did that.

 The owner had created Facebook to show pictures of those people you know. People browse the net for many purposes, like news, entertainment, etc. But people liked to know and see more about their known people than the unknown people. From this concept, Facebook became popular.

Nowadays, Facebook has become a perfect tool for many purposes. Today I will discuss one of its most dangerous effects of it. Facebook became an excellent medium to spread misinformation and disinformation. Facebook uses perfect algorithms to know your likings and preferences. They regularly monitor which news you check, how long you have been there, where you just put your mouse and every other minor detail. Based on that, they show you posts. So, if you are interested in any misinformation, the Facebook algorithm will show you all other related misinformation. And slowly, you will start believing those wrong information and be a media to spread that information to your friends and family. So, other people who may not consider any unknown source will think about it as if it came from you. We can call this technological diffusion.

 

The dangers of misleading information and 3-5 steps that Community Workers can take to counter misinformation/disinformation.

Community Workers should always be aware of all information and misinformation running in the community so that they can take necessary steps to guide the community to avoid any consequences from the misinformation. The steps they might take are:

-          The community worker may report the misinformation to the media who had posted it.

-          The community worker should provide information with proof of the misinformation in the post's comments so that others can be aware of it.

-          In community meetings, the community worker may give accurate information to inform people about misinformation and disinformation.

-          Community Workers may make one-to-one communication where they feel it's needed to spot spreading misinformation.

-          Community workers may arrange community gatherings with knowledgeable persons like scientists, doctors, etc., who might talk with the community people directly to make them aware of the factual, scientific information.

Healthy food in educational organizations

 In colleges and universities, every floor should have a kitchen corner where a student or students can make fresh food and sell it. This way a student can learn and experience how to run a restaurant/food truck and also they will earn some money. At the same time, other students and teachers can have fresh food on their floor so that they don't have to run to other places to get food when they starving.

The educational organization can provide some funds, other organizations or government also can contribute in the fund to help the student and serve food in less price (or free) to the students and teachers (or visitors). This way the student won't have less profit and other students will be able to get good food.

We all want good health for the students for the future of Canada. This way, we can save students from eating fast/junk food ( which is very unhealthy for them).

The building safety monitoring group will check all food services regularly to ensure all safe plans have been followed.

Biography 223: How to make a company successful.

 Once, I joined a company whose owner was living in the UK. He came to Bangladesh, established a company, and returned because of his main job or business. He asked his brother, who was living in the USA, to join the company. His brother came, and I have given an interview with this brother. I got selected and joined.

It was a new company, and I was really scared about the way this brother managed the office. He recruited people, and then he fired them within a month or less if that person failed to show good enough performance. All employees became very scared; no one knew when they might get fired.

I didn't like this idea. But now I was thinking this is a good way actually. He knows people lie in resumes, so he was giving chances to people to prove themselves. If they are not good enough then let them go and let a qualified person join. And also that person should find a suitable position for themselves.

Another thing I learned from him is focusing on marketing. He built a marketing team of 10/12 people. He trained them and met with them every day to know how they were working and give suggestions. That's why from the very first day the marketing team started getting deals, when even our product were not ready. Within a month they bring 1.5 crore deal.

You must be thinking the company must become a very big company soon. No, it's not that brother's fault. It is the owner. The brother said he would give his 100% to this company. Even he might stay permanently in Bangladesh. But he needed more than 50% of the share of the company. But the owner wasn't ready to give his company to his brother. So, this brother went back to the USA. He created his own company over there and is now living there with his wife and child.

The UK living owner couldn't run the company well.

 One of my colleagues, "Laboni," started a new trend with us in Bangladesh. She said every month, we will celebrate our payday. Foreign Investment: During 1960, 50% of foreign investment companies were from the USA. In 2018, Canada made an agreement with China for foreign investment.

Government and the Economy: Canadian Government plays a significant role in the economy. From the beginning, the government created and regulated rail and air transport. It helped by creating rules and regulations to run the private companies well. The government also invests money to educate people about business.

Economic Inequality: Canada’s economic inequality has grown more in recent decades.

 I was a child in Bangladesh when I watched gymnastics at the Olympics on TV. My mom said, don't bother about their dresses. It's in their culture. The way, we don't bother if a kid when they dresses up like that (You can see their bums), they don't bother for the women.

I believed it. Now, I am living in the first world. I am sure women's bum is always attractive to men.

People watch the Olympics, or all sports competitions, to watch sports. To feel it's competition. To enjoy the challenges. It shouldn't be to watch the human body like porn.

People who join the sports participate in the game, but it doesn't mean they have to open or make it visible with the clothes to let people see them and enjoy it. They want their game to be enjoyable.

We (Authority) should not make both males and females wear dresses like that. They are not comfortable at all. People can see every now and then; they fix their dresses or try to hide their body parts with towels. But they can't wear any clothing which is comfortable for them.

Let's not use their bodies to gain money. Let's sports be sports.
